Motorway Tyre Blowouts: Prevention and What to Do

A tyre blowout on the M1 or M62 is one of the most frightening driving experiences imaginable. Here's how to prevent one and how to respond if it happens.

A high-speed tyre blowout is one of the most sudden and destabilising events a driver can experience. The key to surviving it safely is not to panic and not to brake hard — both of which instinctively feel correct but are exactly the wrong responses. Instead, maintain a firm grip on the steering wheel, ease off the accelerator gradually and allow the vehicle to decelerate naturally before steering carefully towards the hard shoulder or a safe stopping area.

Prevention is overwhelmingly preferable. The majority of motorway blowouts are caused by tyres that were already compromised before the journey began: under-inflation causing excessive sidewall flex, age-weakened rubber, pre-existing sidewall damage from pothole strikes, or tread depths below the safe threshold. A five-minute pre-journey tyre check before any motorway drive on the M1, M62 or A1 near Leeds is the single most effective preventive measure.

Leeds Mobile Tyres strongly recommends that drivers check tyre pressures and condition before any long motorway journey and have tyres replaced if there is any doubt about their condition. If you experience a blowout near Leeds on any major route and make it safely to a hard shoulder or services, call us on 0113 5195572.
