TPMS: Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems Explained

That small tyre-shaped warning light on your dashboard could be telling you something important. Here's everything Leeds drivers need to know about TPMS.

TPMS — Tyre Pressure Monitoring System — has been a legal requirement on all new cars sold in the EU and UK since November 2014, and is now standard on the vast majority of vehicles on Leeds roads. The system uses sensors inside each wheel to monitor tyre pressure in real time, alerting the driver via a dashboard warning light if any tyre drops significantly below the recommended pressure.

There are two types of TPMS: direct systems, which use individual pressure sensors in each wheel, and indirect systems, which infer pressure changes by comparing wheel rotation speeds via the ABS sensors. When the TPMS light illuminates while driving in Leeds, you should pull over safely as soon as possible and check your tyre pressures at a nearby forecourt. Do not assume it is a sensor fault.

TPMS sensors can also fail or need replacement, particularly after a tyre change if the sensor is disturbed. Leeds Mobile Tyres carries TPMS sensors for a wide range of vehicles and can diagnose, replace and reset TPMS systems as part of a mobile tyre fitting visit across Leeds and West Yorkshire. Call 0113 5195572 to check availability for your vehicle.
