Understanding Tyre Sidewall Markings Explained

That string of numbers and letters on the side of your tyre actually contains everything you need to know about your tyre size and specification.

Take a look at the sidewall of any car tyre and you will find a sequence like "205/55 R16 91V". Each section of that code carries specific, practical information about what that tyre is designed to do. Understanding these markings helps you confirm you are buying the correct tyre and gives you the knowledge to have an informed conversation with a tyre fitter.

The first number — 205 in the example — is the tyre width in millimetres. The second number, 55, is the aspect ratio: the height of the sidewall as a percentage of the width. The letter R denotes radial construction, which is standard on modern vehicles. The following number, 16, is the wheel diameter in inches. Finally, 91 is the load index — indicating how much weight the tyre can safely carry — and V is the speed rating.

Using the wrong tyre size or specification can affect your vehicle's handling, fuel economy and even invalidate your insurance. If you are unsure which tyre to order for your vehicle, the team at Leeds Mobile Tyres can identify the correct specification from your registration number.
